DRAWN TO DEATH UNDER WHEELS OF TRAIN
Glove of Wrecking Crew Foreman Caught in Cogs of Crane
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Because his glove fitted so tight that he could not draw his hand from it quickly, Charles Gillespie, 45 of Maple avenue, Elmwood, lost his life Thursday in the C H & D railroad yards at Sixth and Baymiller street.
Gillespie was foreman of the C H & D wrecking train crew, and was helping his men place a derailed freight car on the tracks. His glove caught in the cogs of the lifting crane of the wrecking car, and he was drawn under the wheels of the moving freight. He was crushed to death. Coroner Coe ordered the body moved to the morgue.

So now you know.
As do you! Thanks Jane, I always look forward to your comments.
Looking at the article versus the death record, it would appear that there are a few discrepancies that are still left unanswered. Like: Was he in the hospital 4 days?
It gives me a sick feeling in my stomach thinking about how awful this must have been for him and his coworkers to go through. Now knowing it was our greatgrandfather and that he had to suffer like that does really personalize the tragedy even more
From what I can gather: The weather was terrible. Cincinnati had seen a very bad snow storm January 6th which dropped about 9 inches of snow on the ground... it was probably still on the ground on the 13th, and responsible for the train car he was retrieving when his gloved hand got stuck.
Although I was not there, I can picture it all.
Ironically, our dad loved trains.
